The Drone-resistant Bookstore

Staffers at Inklings Bookshop, Yakima, Wash., reacted to the prediction that Amazon will eventually deliver packages via drone by hanging one over the store’s registers with a sign:
WE ARE NOT DRONES
They hope, as Susan Richmond put it in Shelf Awareness, that the drones will act “as a conversation starter for our smart, independent employees who are far from drones. We have 12 employees on our payroll who live in the community, support the economy and pay taxes and are excellent at helping customers face to face.”

She added that the store is also using the drone “to highlight the fact that 95% of the books we order every day are in the store the next day around noon and the whole experience for our customer is bracketed by delightful exchanges with real human beings every step of the way.”

My 15 books in pictures
The other day I responded to naming “15 books you’ve read that will always stick with you.”
I still have most of the ones I named on hand, some obviously very well read. The pictures aren’t quite, shall we say, professional quality, but here they are.

Bertrand Russell’s 10 Commandments of Teaching
British philosopher, mathematician, historian, and social critic Bertrand Russell endures as one of the most intellectually diverse and influential thinkers in modern history, Maria Popova writes in the Daily Good.
His autobiography offers this remarkable micro-manifesto, entitled A Liberal Decalogue, a vision for responsibilities of a teacher, which includes: “Have no respect for the authority of others, for there are always contrary authorities to be found.”
