So call me a colossal nerd who never grew up but I went to see Coyote Vs. Acme” the other day. I heard some tidbits about it (like, it very nearly never even made it to the cinemas…) but I cannot tell you how much joyful anticipation I was feeling in the run-up to this. It’s like being given permission to be fully childlike again, and yet being in a position to cackle at some “grown up” in-jokes planted in there, too.
It’s a toon/live production (think Roger Rabbit) but this one is overflowing with old friends. Tweetie (who is being blackmailed into being a stooge for the bad guys and tinks he taw a lot of stuff…); Sylvester; Porky Pig (the “I’m here for the pantsless modelling gig” had every single person in the movie theatre crack up); Foghorn Leghorn as the slimiest of CEOs, insane Daffy Duck;a guest appearance by a suitably nutty carrot munching Bugs Bunny, and of course Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner in starring roles. Not to mention the deathless (literally) Acme doo-dads which deliver demises in various delightful ways. I purely loved it, in so many different ways. The show I went to was hardly well attended – maybe a dozen or so punters – and it was interesting to see that a lot of them (MOST of them; at least one of the audience members gets a free pass because he was bald as a coot and had no hair at all to base any evidence on) were people with wrinkles and gray hair, chasing the falling anvils of their childhoods. But while you’re cackling away at the in-jokes and the comeuppances that are built into the story line, your heart will grow three sizes during that movie, and “Mr Coyote” and “Mr Runner” (as they are addressed in the courtroom) provide a real moment of wonder as the basis of their relationship is laid bare.
Loved it loved it loved it. I may buy this one if it comes out on DVD. TO watch when the world becomes too heavy to bear, and I need reminding that a falling anvil may not necessarily kill me, only flatten me for a moment and then give me another chance to pop back into three dimensions and try again.
I just thought I would pop in and recommend it to you. Assuming you can still catch it in a theatre near you. I mean… just GO.
And that’s all, folks.
